WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — An investigation is underway after a handgun magazine with ammunition was found at a West Hartford middle school Tuesday, according to the town's police department.
Police said that at 10:30 a.m., officers went to Bristow Middle School on Highland Street after receiving a report about the ammunition that was found.
Investigators were told that a custodian had found the magazine outside on school grounds. Police said that no additional weapons were found after they secured and searched the school with a K9 unit.
Multiple classes were on field trips and were not inside the school at the time, according to police, noting that any students who were off-campus will be given a "safe search" before returning to school.
"As of this time, there is no indication that there is any connection between the ammunition found and the school or any of our students," Principal Chad Ellis said in a letter to Bristow families.
Police are continuing to investigate and ask anyone with information to contact the West Hartford Police Department at 860-523-5203 or through their tip line either by phone at 860-570-8969 or their email, whpdtips@westhartfordct.gov.
Parents and West Hartford residents are also encouraged by police "to have conversations with their loved ones" about letting them know as soon as a gun or part of a gun is found.
