WETHERSFIELD, Conn. — A large group of cars with mufflers that sounded similar to gun fire sparked multiple 911 calls overnight Sunday, Wethersfield police said.
Police said that they received several calls from residents around 12:38 a.m. about a sound of gunshots in the areas of Wolcott Hill Road and east into Old Wethersfield.
The sound was determined to be coming from a gathering of 75 to 100 cars that were found in the parking lot of Putnam Park. A majority of the cars found were equipped with aftermarket mufflers that created the noise of gunshots when the drivers accelerated and decelerated their engines, police said.
The cars immediately fled towards I-91 North as officers arrived on scene. It is currently unknown if police pursued any of the vehicles during the incident.
Police said that there was no physical evidence of gunfire found, but said that it was determined the same group of vehicles had been driving through the town at the time the 911 calls were made.
No property damage or reported injuries were reported, police said.
