WETHERSFIELD, Conn. — The chief of the Wethersfield Fire Department is extending a touching "thank you" to the town community as the department continues to navigate the loss of volunteer firefighter Rob Sharkevich Sr.
Sharkevich died in a UTV crash on Tuesday, Oct. 22 while responding to the brush fire on Lamentation Mountain in Berlin. He was laid to rest Monday, Oct. 28.
Wethersfield Fire Dept. Chief Brian J. Schroll shared a letter to the town community this week, thanking them for the "high gear" and "overwhelming" support over the past few weeks.
"I would like to thank the while Wethersfield Community for their acts of kindness, support, and for keeping the members of the Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers," Schroll said.
Community members offered food, cookies, flowers, gift cards, painted pumpkins and pictures to the fire department, Schroll said.
Schroll also thanked community members who lined the streets as processions brought Sharkevich to his final resting place.
"The men and women of your Fire Department are strong, and as the days go on, the hurt will never fade, but together we will get through these trying times with the community's support," Schroll added.
