October is Pedestrian Safety Month in Connecticut

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. — The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles has announced that the state is observing Pedestrian Safety Month this October, according to a release delivered on Friday.

The DMV hopes to raise awareness about the significance of pedestrian safety in communities across the state, as it reminds drivers, pedestrians and local businesses about their shared responsibility to create safer roads for all.

Recent statistics cited by the DMV note that pedestrian fatalities are on the rise. The DMV says that there is an urgent need for increased awareness and protective measures.

Data from the state’s Transportation Safety Research Center reveals that most Connecticut pedestrian crashes occur during October, November and December between 6 – 7 p.m.

In 2024, the state is tracking 29% ahead of last year in terms of pedestrian-related deaths, but there are still steps that can be taken to improve everyone’s safety.

According to the DMV, it is important to stay visible; wear bright or reflective clothing. Also, use crosswalks and always cross at designated these designated locations while following traffic signals.

The DMV also recommends that pedestrians be aware of their surroundings. This can be accomplished by avoiding distractions such as using your cell phone, even when walking.

At all times, drivers should yield to pedestrians. The DMV says they should always do this; not just sometimes.

“At some point, we are all pedestrians, and we all share the responsibility of being aware of our surroundings… Drivers in particular need to exercise extra caution during the evening commute when the sun is setting or has already set, making it harder to see pedestrians,” DMV Commissioner Tony Guerrera said.

The DMV also points out that parents of children who walk or bike to school should always prioritize safety. The department says it’s essential for parents to talk to their children about being aware of their surroundings, using crosswalks and obeying traffic signals.
