Finding meaning in the Thanksgiving rush: asking travelers what they’re thankful for

A spokesperson for the Connecticut Airport Authority said they're expecting more than 95,000 people in the 10-day stretch of the Thanksgiving travel period.

WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. — At Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks this year, Thanksgiving travelers remembered the meaning of the season amid the stress of long lines and big crowds by talking about what they are thankful for.

“In the 10-day stretch of the Thanksgiving travel period, which started last Friday and goes through this Sunday, we are expecting more than 95,000 people,” said Brian Spyros with the Connecticut Airport Authority.

Each of those arrivals comes with a story, and around Thanksgiving time, their luggage is stuffed with dreams of a good time and gratitude.

FOX61 posed the question to travelers: "what are you thankful for?"

“I’m probably thankful that my teenagers don’t have too much too much of the teenage attitude right now,” said Stephanie Maxwell of Barkhamsted.

“Being able to wake up next to my lady. Being able to eat the food we want, have the roof over our head, and I’m grateful to be sober and alive today,” said Jesse Schwenker of Long Island, New York.

“I’m thankful for good friends and good family. I went to Jamaica to visit a brother who has a disease, a terminal progressive disease, so he’s very close to me,” said Patrick Hamilton of Hartford.

“I’m very thankful for life, health, strength. I’m thankful for my students,” said Lisa Clayton of Hartford.

“My new little grandson. He’s pretty unique and very quirky,” said Judy Marks of West Hartford.

“I’m thankful for loved ones. Thankful for family and the love and support I get,” said Nicholas Maou of Windsor.

“I had a lot of things happen the year before this year. I had a lot of family issues, but for me this is a relatively peaceful year,” said Haonan Bai, a student at UMass.

“Thankful for my family. Thankful to have everything I need. A roof over my head. A car to drive. Money to make,” said Genell Taylor of Windsor.

The miles are only half the measure of a good trip. People should make sure to count the blessings as well.

“We really gotta appreciate what we have and not we really want,” said George Atsalakis of Detroit.
