Windsor Locks students name snowplows at Bradley International Airport ‘Snowbelle’ and ‘Blizzard Wizard’

Next time you see the snowplows on the tarmac of the airport in Windsor Locks, take notice of their creative new names.

WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. — The winners of Bradley International Airport’s first-ever snowplow naming contest were announced by the Connecticut Airport Authority on Tuesday.

Students from the North Street School and South Elementary School participated in the contest by submitting potential names to the airport.

Airport employees then voted on their favorite names from each school. The winning plow names are “Snowbelle,” from a second-grade class at North Street School, and “Blizzard Wizzard,” from a fourth-grade class at South Elementary School – and yes, that’s wizzard with two w’s.

Each name is now featured on the side of two pieces of airport equipment. Students from the winning classes were invited to Bradley International on Tuesday for an unveiling ceremony. They also got to witness up close all the equipment that the airport uses as part of its snow operations.

“Our snow operations are a vital component to maintaining safety and keeping Bradley International Airport open during winter weather events,” Kevin Dillon, executive director of the CAA, said. “Having the students visit us today is meaningful because the airport is right in their community.”

Dillon added that “this is giving them a front row seat to all of the equipment that we use during the winter season and the hard work that goes into it all thanks to our team of dedicated employees.”

Bradley International has 32 pieces of specialized equipment, which can plow, sweep and blow snow. The equipment is created for snow removal on the runways, taxiways and ramp areas.

Shawn Parkhurst, the superintendent of Windsor Locks Public Schools, said he can’t thank the airport enough. He gave a shout out to the students, staff and principals for putting the contest together. Parkhurst looks forward to the potential of more collaborative opportunities soon.

“As the superintendent, I value our community partnerships, and this is an example of that,” Parkhurst said. “Our students were provided with a real-life experience that culminated in this incredible field trip at Bradley International Airport, which is right in our backyard.”

The CAA said that other plow names that were considered included “Sir Plowington III,” “Scoopy,” Flying Snow Mover” and “Snowlof.”
