Lesser-known candidates try to break through to Bridgeport voters ahead of contentious mayor’s race

Lamond Daniels, who petitioned his way onto the ballot says his campaign is all about giving people a reason to vote.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Bridgeport voters will head to the polls Tuesday, once again, to cast their vote for mayor. You've heard about Joe Ganim and John Gomes, but they aren't the only ones on the ballot.

Many eyes will be on Bridgeport on Tuesday. Specifically, everyone will be watching the absentee ballot tally. As of Monday, 2,553 ABs have been mailed to voters in Bridgeport.

In 12 hours the polls will open. But the question remains, will the votes count?

“We are at this very moment talking with the Attorney General’s office,” said Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas.

Voters also want to know, if they will be counted correctly.

“The only thing we can do here is the best we can. We already have received complaints that they are playing the same tricks,” said candidate for Mayor John Gomes.

Republican David Herz said Bridgeport needs a new course.

“I don’t think Gomes and Ganim are cut from a different cloth. I think they are very similar shades of blue and it’s not going to make a difference which one is there and they know it, which is why they are spending time on who is stealing ballots instead of on issues,” remarked Herz.

Meanwhile, Lamond Daniels, who petitioned his way onto the ballot says his campaign is all about giving people a reason to vote.

“We need to do better with affordable housing. We have to work with our schools and provide resources there. We need to bring good jobs and economic development to our city and that’s just not happening and I’m so concerned that this scandal is distracting us from challenges happening every day in the city,” said Daniels.

Notably, the only candidate who didn’t respond to FOX61’s request for an interview was incumbent Mayor Joe Ganim, who posted his best pitch on social media.

“If you care about the quality of education in school or the fact that we hold the line on taxes, public safety, sustainability and beautiful parks, paved streets, and infrastructure improvements. Now is the time to come out and vote,” said Ganim in a Facebook video.

Bridgeport ballot fraud has put Connecticut’s most populous city on the map for all the wrong reasons. It’s become a poster child in right-wing circles for stolen elections. It prompted comments from businessman and investor Elon Musk, and over the weekend, former president Donald Trump himself. “Many people have lost confidence in the AB process because of what has happened so we are encouraging everyone to go out and vote in person to be sure their vote counts the way it needs to be counted,” said Gomes.

FOX61 checked in with the Secretary of the State’s Office Monday to see if they’ve received any clarity on if it will be necessary to hold a new primary depending on who wins - they have not, but they will be releasing new information Tuesday.
