NEW HARTFORD, Conn. — It’s been an uphill fight this ski season for areas across Connecticut but, this weekend, a powerful winter storm delivered the goods. At Ski Sundown in New Hartford its been a chance for skiers to revel in the window of winter weather.
Robin Cunningham, a local from New Hartford made her first runs of the year after ten inches of snow fell on the slopes at Sundown.
“The conditions are great and it's so pretty. The sun is out, there is snow on the trees, it looks great,” she said.
Ben Switzgable, the operations manager at Ski Sundown said that their equation is simple, flakes fall down and their lot fills up.
“Over the weekend we got a very nice solid ten inches of snow on Saturday night into Sunday and what it really does is, I think, it gets people in the winter mindset when they see their trees covered in snow, it gets them excited, it gets us excited, and it brings out a lot more smiles for everyone,” Switzgable said.

After tackling a run atop the new snow, long-time skier Glenn Shafer from West Hartford laughed.
“I haven’t broken my leg yet and it’s a blue sky and I’m an old man and I love to ski,” Shafer said.
With the threat of more rain in the forecast, Switzgable said his team does what they can to preserve the snow.
“When we have opportunities we seize them and we do a really good job building our base and keeping snow in piles that we can pull on when we need when the weather doesn’t go our way," Switzgable said.
Before getting on the Exhibition Triple Chair, Jamie Miller from Rocky Hill added, “we are having a blast. You can’t beat it; sunshine and conditions are great.”
