WINSTED, Conn. — A person died in an early morning fire in Winsted on Wednesday, fire officials confirmed.
Winsted fire officials said they responded at 6:29 a.m. to the report of a structure fire at 350 Walnut Street in Winsted.
Fire personnel saw heavy fire coming from the front window of a single-family residence. The fire was put out and, after a search of the residence, the body of a male occupant was found dead inside the residence. A dog was also found dead
There were no other occupants inside the residence at the time of the fire and no other injuries were reported.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is investigating the cause of death and the positive identity of the man.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Winchester Fire Marshal’s Office, the Winchester Police Department, and the Connecticut State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit
There is no apparent criminal aspect.
Residents are reminded to check their smoke detectors to ensure they are working properly. Residents are also urged to use extreme caution when using supplemental heating appliances such as space heaters inside their homes and make sure to follow the manufacturer's recommendations on clearances to combustibles.
