FEMA opens Disaster Recovery Centers in Southbury and Wilton

Each location will provide in-person assistance with applying for federal aid after August’s devastating floods.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has deployed around 100 people across Connecticut to help thousands of effective homeowners from the storm on Aug. 18.

CONNECTICUT, USA — The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, has opened two more Disaster Recovery Centers in areas of the state that were highly affected by the severe flooding that occurred in August.

Gov. Ned Lamont announced that the centers are in Southbury and Wilton. They are providing in-person assistance to homeowners, renters, businesses and private nonprofits seeking to apply for federal disaster aid for damages that were suffered when flooding impacted the western portion of Connecticut on Aug. 18.

The Southbury center is located at Southbury Town Hall at 501 Main Street South, while the Wilton location is at Our Lady of Fatima Church at 229 Danbury Road. Both centers are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. They are also open on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Lamont’s office said anyone who lives in any town affected by flooding from the Aug. 18 storm can visit either center to seek help applying for aid.

“In addition to being able to apply online and over the phone, these FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers are providing in-person support to homeowners, renters, businesses and private nonprofits seeking federal disaster aid from the horrible flooding western Connecticut experienced in August,” Lamont said.

He strongly encourages anyone seeking help to apply as soon as possible to meet all federal deadlines.

At the FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers, residents will find representatives who can provide program information, explain how to apply for federal disaster aid, answer questions and offer information regarding repairs and rebuilding to make homes more resistant to disasters.

Lamont’s office added that the recovery centers are open to people with disabilities and other needs. The facilities have assistive technology equipment, allowing disaster survivors to communicate with staff.

Services are offered in English and Spanish, and anyone in need of a reasonable accommodation or sign language interpreter to speak with FEMA can call 1-833-285-7448 for help.

One does not have to visit a FEMA Disaster Recovery Center to apply for federal disaster aid, according to Lamont’s office. Applications can also be completed online here, by calling the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362, or by using the FEMA app.

Last month, Lamont’s office announced the opening of two Business Recovery Centers located in Monroe and Oxford that are being run by the U.S. Small Business Administration. They both provide similar in-person assistance to businesses and homeowners.

The federal disaster relief is made possible by the major disaster declaration approved by President Joe Biden last month for the FEMA Individual Assistance Program in Fairfield County, Litchfield County and New Haven County.
