WATERTOWN, Connecticut — Three adults have been charged in connection to a teen who shot himself in September for failing to secure firearms and risk of injury to a minor.
Investigators were told early on in their investigation that numerous firearms were in the residence and were unsecured. On the second floor of the residence, they found numerous unsecured firearms and ammunition as well as several firearms that were lawfully secured.
Police said a total of 20 firearms were found unsecured and accessible in the second-floor bedroom of Soto-Berrios and Salcevski which were registered to Soto-Berrios.
Elizabeth Salcevski, 59, the victim's grandmother, was charged with one count of criminal negligent storage of a firearm, four counts of risk of injury to a minor and four counts of reckless endangerment in the first degree.
Salcevski was held on a $200,000 bond and is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday at the Waterbury Superior Court.
Jose Soto-Berrios, 55, Salcevski's partner, was charged with one count of criminal negligent storage of a firearm, four counts of risk of injury to a minor and four counts of reckless endangerment in the first degree.
Soto-Berrios was held on a $200,000 bond and transferred to the Waterbury Superior Court on Tuesday.
Patricia Milot, the teen's mother, was charged with four counts of risk of injury to a minor.
Milot was held on a $25,000 and transferred to the Waterbury Superior Court for arraignment on Tuesday.
This stems from an incident on September 20, where officers were called to a home on Hadley Street on the report of a teen who fell down the stairs and was bleeding from the head.
Police said the call was placed by the teen's grandmother, who had just gotten home. Before she arrived, the teen was home alone.
When police got to the home, they found the teen on the first floor, bleeding heavily from an injury to his head. Officials said he was conscious but incoherent.
The Watertown Fire Department immediately gave him medical aid.
Investigators followed the blood trail up the stairs and into a bedroom used by adult members of his family. Inside the room, officers found a "significant amount of blood" and an empty holster for a revolver, according to officials.
Watertown officials said the initial investigation indicated the teen had accessed an unsecured .22 revolver inside the home when he was alone. Officials said that the teen began to play with the gun, which accidentally discharged and struck the boy in the head.
Police said four children live in the residence, ages 15, 14, eight and two years old. The four counts reflect a charge for each minor living in the residence.
