KENT, Conn — Two men from The Bronx are accused of stealing grease from a restaurant in Kent overnight Monday, according to Connecticut State police.
State police were called to a restaurant in Kent around 2:45 a.m. after a burglar alarm went off while the restaurant was closed.
Arriving troopers saw a white van leaving the rear parking lot and getting onto Route 7 South.
State police were able to catch up to the van and pull it over. The driver, identified as Carlos Alberto Salas, 45, and passenger Joan Mendez-Martinez, 26, were in the vehicle, state police said.
Salas told police that he and Mendez-Martinez were going to several restaurants to clean their kitchens but could not provide a list of restaurants or details on how the kitchens were cleaned.
Using a New Milford police officer to translate, Mendez-Martinez told police that he was working for a company out of The Bronx and only visited one restaurant that night.
State police found two 250-gallon vats that were one-thirds full of what appeared to be cooking grease, and both men could not provide paperwork for having the cooking grease.
A trooper went back to the restaurant and found the seal to the grease bin was broken and also found fresh grease droplets on the ground.
Salas and Mendez-Martinez were both arrested and were charged with burglary, criminal mischief and larceny. Both were released on a $5,000 bond. Mendez-Martinez was arraigned later Monday and Salas is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 7.
