TORRINGTON, Conn. — Two men were arrested in Torrington Friday after fighting with an officer and attempting to enter a police cruiser, police said.
Officers were investigating in the area of Notting Hill Gate around 7:10 p.m. for a report of two suspicious men who were seen walking into a garage. The two men reportedly arrived in a gray Chevy Suburban, which matched the description of a stolen car out of Litchfield that Connecticut State Police were looking for moments earlier, police said.
Officers in the area found a man, matching the description in the suspicious person report, who was walking along the roadway. The man ignored the officers' attempts to talk to him, police said.
While an officer attempted to stop the man from walking away, police said a car began driving towards him and struck his right side before going off road into a tree. A second man, dressed in dark clothing and a mask, stepped out of the car and refused to listen to any of the officers' commands.
Both men made an attempt to enter the officer's police cruiser, police said. The officer reportedly began fighting with the two suspects in an attempt to stop them.
One of the men involved fled the scene on foot and was later found by both Torrington and Connecticut State Police in a nearby marsh. The other man was arrested at the scene by officers.
No injuries were reported to any of the officers involved during the incident, police said.
The two men involved were identified as 27-year-old Elijah Volpe of Derby, and 39-year-old Frantz Menard of Bridgeport. Volpe was given multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit, home invasion, interfering with an officer, larceny, and theft of a firearm. Menard's charges include conspiracy to commit, home invasion, larceny, theft of a firearm, reckless driving, and operating under suspension. Both are being held on a $1,000,000 bond and scheduled to appear in Torrington court on Dec. 11.
Police ask anyone with information for their investigation to contact the Torrington Police Detective Division at 860-489-2000.
