Recount is underway in Torrington

All of Connecticut's elections have been called except for one - the town of Torrington is currently holding a recount.

TORRINGTON, Conn. — Tuesday afternoon, the town of Torrington began a recount of about 7,000 ballots.

It isn’t because of a race being too close though; it’s what’s called a discrepancy recanvas, due to issues on Election Day.

Election officials say those discrepancies are a combination of things.

Tabulator machines malfunctioned, one batch had a printing error, and the town says they were overwhelmed with both early voting and same-day registration.

That’s why they’re recounting just early voter, absentee and same-day registration ballots.

“Every vote counts, and we want to make sure every citizen in the city of Torrington can be reassured that their voice is being heard, and the will of the voters is being adhered to,” said Jacque Williams, the Democratic Registrar of Voters for Torrington.

The 65th state House district is exclusively in Torrington. The seat has been represented by Democrat Michelle Cook since 2009.

Republican challenger Joe Canino is claiming victory.

“Of course, it's a little bit frustrating when it's not ready that night, but I would rather have us do the process fully, completely and transparently to make sure that every resident’s voice is heard and this is what’s playing out before us,” Canino said Tuesday.

Cook’s campaign says they haven’t received complete results from the town yet. In a statement to her social media on election night, she wrote, “Though longer than expected, we will have an answer at the end of this road. Thank you for all your patience and understanding.”

The 8th state Senate district could also be affected by the updated tally. Right now, those results show Democrat Paul Honig unseating current Republican senator Lisa Seminara.

Neither of those campaigns expect the outcome to change, only the margin by which Honig won.

The Secretary of the State also announced towns to be audited post-election Tuesday, but that has nothing to do with Torrington’s recanvas and is standard procedure after every election.
