CROMWELL, Conn — The mother of a child found dead has been charged with murder following a crash in Cromwell back in September.
Devoni Miller, of Cromwell, was charged with Murder, Risk of Injury to a Child, Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree, Evading Responsibilities with Injuries, Reckless Driving, and Interfering with an Emergency Vehicle.
Miller was held on a $1 million court-set bond and transferred to the custody of the CT Department of Corrections, pending her scheduled arraignment on December 22, at Middletown Superior Court.
The death of her son, De'Royal Miller, 2, was ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner earlier this month.
The cause of the 2-year-old 's death was drowning, according to the OCME earlier this month.
On September 11, state police responded to a crash on Rt. 9 South in Exit 25. Police said when they arrived, they found one of the vehicles unoccupied.
During the investigation, police determined that a woman and a young child were seen walking away from the crash and down an embankment next to the highway. Police said it is unclear whether the pair went down the bank intentionally or by mistake.
Some hours later, a woman who was wearing similar clothing and matching the description of the person who left the crash was found walking along Rt. 9 North without the child, police said. She was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Not long after, an unresponsive child was found nearby in a rocky area of the Connecticut River. The child was taken to the hospital where he was later declared dead.
