Police investigating fatal domestic violence shooting at Apple Rehab in Cromwell

Officials said there is no public threat at this time.

CROMWELL, Conn — Police are investigating after two people were killed in a shooting at a rehab center in Cromwell on Friday.

Cromwell police responded around 11 a.m. at the Apple Rehab Center on Friday morning after receiving several 911 calls.

A husband was visiting his wife, a rehab patient, when he shot the woman and then turned the gun on himself, FOX61 confirmed on the scene. They were the only two people in the room, and there were no other injuries.

Police identified the couple Friday afternoon as Barbara Brandt, 81, the victim, and Dennis Brandt, 82.

Apple Rehab is "shocked and saddened" about the shooting. The rehab center is in contact with the Deptartment of Public Health to bring extra staff in to help those who may be struggling with the trauma of the shooting.

"There is a front desk position where we do screening, and there is a notification of what you can or can’t bring in the nursing home. This was not anticipated," said Mike Landi, vice president of Operations at Apple Rehab. "Completely unfortunate tragedy."

There were no evacuations and there is "no danger to the community," Apple Rehab told FOX61.

"Nobody should have to experience this at work," said Sherda Baker, whose mom works at Apple Rehab.

She added that her mom "did hear the gunshot and she was able to hide."

The state Department of Public Health is "monitoring the quality of care and services" at the rehab center "to ensure a safe environment."

"The Connecticut Department of Public Health extends its sympathies to the victims, families and staff associated with the incident," Commissioner Dr. Manisha Juthani said in a statement Friday afternoon.

FOX61 will update this post as information becomes available.
