HADDAM, Conn. — Thirteen students are safe after the school bus they were on collided with downed wires Wednesday afternoon, according to Connecticut State Police.
At 4:03 p.m., troopers from State Police Troop F went to 89 W Maple Ave. in Haddam for a report of an incident involving a school bus that went into downed wires. The Haddam Volunteer Fire Company also responded.
Investigators learned that the collision happened after a tree took down the wires, state police said.
Thirteen students were on board along with the driver as crews from Eversource arrived to remove the power line from the bus, according to the HVFC. A section of Maple Avenue West was closed as crews worked at the scene.
The kids were evacuated onto another bus once the area was found safe and taken to Silver Springs Drive to meet with their parents, the HVFC said.
HVFC has since left the area with Eversource still at the scene. Haddam firefighters went to two other powerline incidents Wednesday involving a pole fire at the Haddam Transfer Station, as well as a smoldering tree that was leaning on wires on Turkey Hill Road.
