CLINTON, Connecticut — A horse had to be rescued by numerous crews after getting stuck in a swamp in Clinton on Tuesday morning.
The Clinton Volunteer Fire Department said that the Clinton Emergency Communications Center received a call at 9:55 a.m. from a concerned horse owner asking for assistance with a horse stuck in a swamp.
The Durham Animal Rescue Team and a veterinarian who specializes in horses were also requested to the scene.
Responders were taken to a swamp just north of the horse barn, where the 5-year-old horse had gotten startled, broken through a wooden fence and was found 200 ft from the shore in 3-4 ft of muddy water.
Crews wore cold water exposure suits and entered the swamp, once they made contact they were able to lead the horse back toward shore utilizing its bridle.
The horse collapsed from exhaustion 20 ft from shore.
Members cleared a path from shore into the swamp, using sheets of plywood and rubber barn stall mats a bridge was created to slide the horse towards shore.
Eight members remained in the water throughout the operation to manage the horse through the mud and weeds.

Using soft slings and a rope system, the horse was carefully slid a few feet at a time. Upon their arrival, the DART team provided animal-specific tools to assist with removal, with that assistance the horse was able to get back onto its feet and was escorted to the barn for treatment. Numerous units and 20 members operated on the scene for just over two hours.
No Injuries are reported at this time.
