ESSEX, Conn. — A teen was arrested on Saturday in the killing of a family member in Essex, Connecticut State Police said.
Troopers responded to a residence in the area of Plains Road after receiving a call around 1 a.m. from 18-year-old Matthew Craig of Ivoryton who said he fatally stabbed a member of his family multiple times, according to state police.
First responders who arrived at the home found a male lying on the floor with multiple stab wounds to the chest and back area. State police said he was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m.
The identity of the male who was stabbed, as well as his relation to Craig, has not been disclosed by state police at this time.
Detectives were told by Craig and two witnesses at the scene that the stabbing was an attempt to intervene in a physical dispute between the male victim and a female, state police said.
Based on preliminary information at the scene, including interviews and physical evidence, Matthew Craig was arrested and charged with manslaughter in the first degree and risk of injury to a minor.
A juvenile was also inside the home at the time of the stabbing, state police said.
Craig is currently being held on a $250,000 bond and was taken to Hartford Correctional Center before his arraignment at Middletown Superior Court on Oct. 30.
