CHESHIRE, Conn. — A black bear was euthanized after biting a woman in Cheshire Saturday, according to the state's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
DEEP Environmental Conversation Police responded to a report that a woman was bit at 4 p.m. on Saturday. According to Cheshire police, the incident happened in the area of Cornwall Avenue and Oak Avenue as she was sitting in her backyard.
The woman had minor injuries and refused treatment, DEEP said.
The bear, which police previously said had last been seen on Oak Avenue, was found by EnCon officers and euthanized. It was then turned over to DEEP wildlife biologists for a necropsy.
The bear weighed 280 pounds and was an adult male, according to DEEP. Police noted that the bear had two tags on its ear, was "slow moving" and did "not appear to be healthy."
Residents are reminded by DEEP to keep their distance from black bears and remember that, "while normally docile," they are "large, extremely powerful wild animals, and, like other wild animals, their behavior can be unpredictable."
