New details into Branford torture attack revealed in affidavit

The affidavit details what happened that night and also offers some insight into a motive behind the violent attack.

BRANFORD, Conn. — NOTE: This article mentions events of sexual assault and violence.

The affidavit of three suspects accused of torturing a 22-year-old man describes what happened during the violent attack and kidnapping in Branford.

Branford police released an affidavit, stating the victim was lured to a remote area on Sept. 1 and forced to strip down to his underwear.

Some of the moments were caught on video, police said. The victim's hair was lit on fire, his back was sliced with a knife, and he was shot several times with a BB gun, all over the course of three hours, according to police. There is also evidence that he was sexually assaulted, police said.

When officers interviewed the victim at Yale New Haven Hospital, they said his eyes were swollen shut, his front teeth were missing, and he was being treated for lung damage.

This week, officers arrested two 17-year-old suspects and 22-year-old Avante Ryan of Hartford, who multiple witnesses describe to police as a known member of the “Bloods” gang with a criminal history.

The affidavit also offers some insight into a motive behind the violent attack. One of the suspects told police that the victim had sexually assaulted her, and this was payback.

Ryan faces charges for first-degree assault, aggravated sexual assault, cruelty to persons, and criminal use of a firearm, among other charges.

He denies the allegations and is being held in jail on a $1 million bond.

The two 17-year-olds also remain in custody, facing 13 charges in connection with the violence.
