Cheshire teacher resigns after 'hurtful,' 'deeply concerning' comments made in viral video: Superintendent

Annie Dunleavy, a special education teacher at Chapman Elementary School in Cheshire, resigned effective immediately Wednesday, the superintendent said.

CHESHIRE, Conn. — A Cheshire special education teacher has resigned after a video circulated online that showed her making "hurtful" and "deeply concerning" comments, according to the town superintendent.

Annie Dunleavy, a special education teacher at Chapman Elementary School in Cheshire, announced her resignation effective immediately Wednesday, the superintendent said.

The announcement comes after school officials confirmed Tuesday that she was placed on leave. FOX61 has not been able to authenticate or determine how the video was obtained. In the video, the teacher is heard using obscenities and alluding to threats of violence against those who voted for President-elect Donald Trump.

Cheshire Superintendent Dr. Jeff Solan provided the below statement:

"The Cheshire Public Schools has a rich tradition of tremendous educators who welcome all students and families with respect and appreciation. The comments on that video did not reflect the position of our school system. They were hurtful, deeply concerning, and ultimately undermined the faith that our community has placed in us. Every student and family has the right to attend our school free from the concern of political prejudice let alone their safety.

As a leader of this school system, I feel terrible for the angst that this caused our community and I look forward to returning our focus on the great work that our educators perform every day.

I appreciate the patience demonstrated as a due process investigation takes time to ensure that it is methodical, thorough and legally compliant During any such process, I am obviously limited in what can be shared with members of our community. Thank you for your faith in ensuring that we would ultimately reach an appropriate resolution."

A town meeting was held Tuesday night where teachers expressed their frustrations on the superintendent's handling of the situation and how politicians from both sides hadn't commented publicly.

In a statement from the president of Connecticut Education Association, a teacher's union, CEA President Kate Dias said regarding the video, “CEA values the right to free speech and respects the diverse opinions of our members. We know that emotions can run high after an election, and we encourage everyone to engage in respectful conversations as part of our democratic process. Keeping our discussions civil and focused is important in maintaining a positive environment in our schools. We must continue to share our views constructively while prioritizing respect, unity, and our shared commitment to educating and caring for our students."

The Cheshire Police Department investigated and determined that no criminal charges would be brought in the case.
