BRANFORD, Conn. — A woman from Tuscon, Arizona was killed over the weekend after a wrong-way crash in Branford, state police said.
The crash happened Sunday just before 7:30 a.m. on Interstate 95 South. According to state police, the tractor-trailer was traveling in the center lane of three between exits 53 and 52.
The woman, identified as 48-year-old Satoya McCullers-Mays, was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the wrong direction (northbound) on the southbound side.
For an unknown reason, the Jeep veered into the center lane and then crashed head-on into the tractor-trailer, state police said.
The initial impact ejected McCullers-Mays out of the Jeep and the Jeep caught on fire. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was also injured but not severely and he was evaluated at the scene and refused to be taken to the hospital.
The crash caused the highway to be closed in the area for around six hours.
Troop G is requesting anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Trooper Farrow #1214, at 203-696-2500 or rahiem.farrow@ct.gov. State police also ask if people were driving through the area of the collision at the time of the crash, and may have footage recorded on a vehicle-equipped dashboard camera, to also contact Troop G.
