DERBY, Connecticut — The Hospital Elder Life Program at Griffin Hospital in Derby needs volunteers to give additional support to elderly patients.

A release from the hospital notes that research has proven between 30-50% of seniors can experience a decline in their physical and cognitive abilities during a hospital stay.

HELP is a comprehensive, evidence-based program that prioritizes patient care. It provides significant connections between volunteers and patients such as mealtime assistance, daily orientation, therapeutic activities, walking and exercise. The goal is to help patients maintain their optimal level of well-being.

“The HELP program is a wonderful opportunity for individuals to directly impact the lives of others,” said Karen Platt, director of Planetree Programs and Services at Griffin Hospital. “HELP volunteers provide a caring human touch and encouragement, adding an additional layer of support to what they receive clinically.”

The hospital started HELP in 2017 and has given support to thousands of elderly patients during the program’s existence.

HELP volunteers also work in collaboration with the hospital’s doctors and nursing staff, focusing on issues specific to geriatric care and providing education to patients and their families. The hospital said there will be a training session for HELP volunteers in the coming weeks.

“Our HELP volunteers tell us that the experience is very rewarding, as it has strengthened connections within their own families,” Platt said. “For those interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, the HELP program gives them a unique insight into how healthcare is provided, how to personalize care and how to keep the person at the center of patient care.”

Platt added that, “Most importantly, [volunteers] tell us that there is no better feeling than to see someone’s face light up while talking with them, playing games or providing comfort through eating assistance or mobility exercises.”

Anyone aged 18 or older is eligible to volunteer for HELP, and no previous medical experience is required. Training and supervision are also provided.

According to the hospital, volunteers must give a six-month commitment of one four-hour shift per week. The program is most needed on weekdays from 4-8 p.m., but limited day shifts are available too.

The hospital encourages college students looking to enter the medical field to apply, as the opportunity will provide hands-on experience. College scholarship incentives are also available.
