HAMDEN, Conn. — Connecticut State Police arrested a Stamford man in Hamden Monday night after he reportedly drove the wrong way and crashed his sedan at the Route 15 southbound Exit 60 off-ramp while under the influence of alcohol.
Troopers charged Travis Lamont Williams, 31, with illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol/drugs, failure to drive in proper lane, driving the wrong way on a divided highway and second-degree reckless endangerment.
Around 11:15 p.m. on Dec. 2, Troop I in Bethany received a wrong-way detection alert at the Route 15 southbound Exit 60 off-ramp in Hampden, showing a silver Infiniti sedan traveling in the wrong direction.
When troopers arrived on scene, they discovered that the vehicle crashed into the off-ramp’s guardrail. The sedan was left disabled after it sustained significant front-end damage, state police said.
According to state police, Williams was found standing outside of the vehicle. He was identified as the driver and reported no injuries.
State police said that Williams displayed signs of impairment and that troopers detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and observed his eyes were glassy and bloodshot while speaking with him.
Williams reportedly admitted to drinking alcohol before the crash. He agreed to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which state police say were not performed to standard. Williams was then arrested and taken to Troop I for processing.
State police say Williams was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled for arraignment at Meriden Superior Court on Dec. 20.
