DERBY, Conn. — Arthur “Artie” Fredericks, a longtime contributor to public safety in Derby, passed away on Tuesday at Yale New Haven Hospital, according to a release from his family.
Fredericks, Jr., 82, was a retired Derby police detective and served as an active member of the Derby Fire Department and Storm Ambulance Corps.
After being sworn in on June 13, 1969, Fredericks, Jr. spent 29 years with the Derby Police Department, his family said. He was promoted to detective on May 13, 1974, and became a detective sergeant on April 27, 1984. He retired from the department on Jan. 20, 1998.
Fredericks, Jr. served as a first responder from an early age. His family said that at 15 years old, he began as a volunteer with Storms Engine Co. and became a fire instructor who trained hundreds of firefighters.
“(He shared) his knowledge and love of fighting fires and helping others to all that would listen,” the release said.
Fredericks, Jr. was also a trained EMT IV technician, a devout Catholic and a man who cherished his family above all else.
On Sunday, from 1-3 p.m., friends and family are invited to pay their respects to Fredericks, Jr. at the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home, located at 253 Elizabeth St. in Derby, the family said.
A procession will leave the funeral home on Monday at 10:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Church in Derby, and internment will follow at Mt. St. Peters Cemetery in Derby.
The family said in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Storms Engine Co., 151 Olivia St., Derby, Conn. 06148.
