MERIDEN, Conn. — An investigation into a "storm drain explosion" in Meriden Tuesday night deemed that the area was safe, the town's police department said. A suspicious item was found and was later determined not to be explosive.
Just after 6 p.m., police said they went to the area of Cross Street at Women's Way after receiving a report of an explosion inside a storm drain and found smoke coming from a nearby drain.
Police determined that were no injuries or damage from the explosion that "did not appear to be overly large" and that "there is no danger to the community."
According to investigators, a device was also found that was "suspicious in nature" during a check in a second storm drain that was adjacent to the first, leading to officers closing off the surrounding area to prevent anyone from being hurt.
The Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad was called to the scene and removed the device, police said. They eventually determined that it was not capable of explosion.
The exact cause of the original explosion is currently unknown.
