HARTFORD, Conn. — A Milford man who used an encrypted phone messaging application to traffic various drugs was sentenced to three years in federal prison on Wednesday, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
Wilson Guzman, Jr., 40, was sentenced in Hartford; his three years in prison are followed by two years of supervised release.
Prosecutors said that Guzman, Jr. used the app Telegram to distribute illegal narcotics.
Court documents and statements made in court note that a DEA New Haven Task Force investigation discovered that Guzman, Jr. advertised numerous controlled substances such as fake oxycodone pills containing fentanyl and fake Adderall pills containing methamphetamine, and other drugs, on Telegram.
Prosecutors said that Guzman, Jr. then distributed the drugs to customers both in person and through U.S. mail. He used locations in West Haven, North Haven and East Haven to store and prepare drugs for distribution.
Investigators made controlled purchases of drugs from Guzman, Jr. between May and August 2023; these included more than 1,000 counterfeit pills containing fentanyl, counterfeit Adderall containing methamphetamine and psilocybin mushrooms.
On Sept. 6, 2023, Guzman, Jr. was arrested. That day, investigators searched his Milford home and the West Haven and North Haven properties and seized numerous controlled substances such as fake Adderall, psilocybin mushrooms and around 20 kilograms of marijuana. An AR-15 style rifle and Glock style Polymer 80 handgun with no serial numbers were also found.
Guzman has been detained since Sept. 21, 2023; he continued using Telegram for drug trafficking activity and had his bond revoked. He pleaded guilty on May 20, prosecutors said.
The matter was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New Haven Task Force, the East Haven Police Department, West Haven Police Department, New Haven Police Department, Connecticut State Police, Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Marshals Service.
