MILFORD, Conn. — The inventory manager at the Total Wine and More store in Milford is going to need to order a lot more of a certain brand of a popular adult beverage, following an incident that caused thousands of dollars in damage. It ended with a call to police and a shopper in handcuffs.
This happened Thursday at the store on Cherry Street, located in the same shopping plaza as ShopRite and a branch of the Nutmeg State Credit Union.
The manager of the Total Wine and More store told Milford police it started when a shopper inquired about buying a large quantity of Patrón tequila, officers said.
While waiting for the staff to assist him, 56-year-old John Reynolds of New Haven allegedly started banging on the locked case of the tequila bottles. He banged so hard, that the glass door of the case shattered, according to police. Reynolds removed some bottles of Patrón, put some of them in a shopping cart, and then threw other bottles to the ground, smashing them to pieces, police said.
The damage to the glass case and the value of the broken bottles of Patrón totaled an estimated $12,000, police said.
Reynolds was charged with breach of peace and criminal mischief.
This is the second incident in Connecticut this week in which a liquor store dealt with a smash-and-grab crime. On Wednesday, a Meriden man was arrested for smashing the window of a North Haven liquor store.
