MILFORD, Conn. — The man accused of leaving a baby behind in a bathtub at a Milford motel has pleaded not guilty to charges related to the events that led to the baby's death.
Dale Kirkland pleaded not guilty to risk of injury and cruelty of persons. Kirkland may soon face more charges, the state said in court Wednesday.
Milford police were called to the Mayflower Motel in Milford on Wednesday, Aug. 21, after a cleaning crew found a baby, aged three to six months old, in the bathtub of a vacant room. The baby was then rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Kirkland was arrested later that evening and was held on a $1 million bond, and arraigned the next day.
The Dept. of Children and Families said they were "involved with the family" of the baby for about a month before the baby's death.
Kirkland's next scheduled court date is Thursday, Sept. 26.
