Naugatuck homeowners voice frustration with proposed Amazon warehouse

Questions regarding run-off water displacement and noise concerns were brought up during a meeting Wednesday.

NAUGATUCK, Conn. — Naugatuck homeowners voiced their frustration with a proposed Amazon warehouse during a meeting held on Wednesday.

Questions regarding run-off water displacement and noise concerns were brought up.

“The biggest concern is the blasting that will probably have to take place,” Barbara Whitaker said. “It’s just the effect of the blasting and what it will do to my home.”

Blue Water Project held the informational meeting for Naugatuck residents to get a better understanding of the proposal. A similar meeting was held the day before for those that live in Waterbury.

Homeowners said they don’t want this proposed warehouse in their backyard. Carol Mallery and her husband have owned their house for longer than 25 years and never saw this coming.

“If they're saying 500 people coming to work, I’d like to see how they would like it in their neighborhood,” Mallery said.

The proposed building will bring 500-1,000 jobs to both cities and an additional 300 construction jobs as well.

People at the meeting spoke about not feeling heard or respected when it comes to the proposal. Some, however, think this will be great for the area.

“It’s going to bring in revenue, jobs and it’s going to be great for the borough,” Smitty Payne Jr. said.

Thomas Hyde, CEO of the Naugatuck Valley Regional Development Corporation said this is great economically for both Waterbury and Naugatuck.

“The project is slated to be worth $150 million, which will bring in significant tax revenue for Waterbury and Naugatuck,” Hyde said.

There will be a public hearing on Oct. 3 at 6:45 p.m. For details on the location, one can call (203) 720-7042.
