NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A 45-year-old Naugatuck woman pleaded guilty in New Haven on Friday to a fraud offense related to an embezzlement scheme she participated in, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

Jennifer Cormier waved her right to be indicted after embezzling $865,106 from her employer over a six-year period, prosecutors say.

Court documents and statements note that Cormier was employed at a family-owned business in Naugatuck, identified in court documents only as “Company A.” There, she performed bookkeeping and other office-related tasks.

According to prosecutors, between 2017 and July 2023, Cormier stole from her employer by illegally creating approximately 1,000 checks made payable to herself and to “cash.” She forged the signature of Company A’s owner or used the owner’s signature stamp on the checks.

Prosecutors say Cormier then cashed the checks or deposited them into her personal bank account. Once the checks were issued, she deleted the transaction in Company A’s accounting system. It was through this scheme that Cormier embezzled $865,106.

Cormier pleaded guilty to bank fraud Friday, which carries a maximum prison term of 30 years. She has been released on a $50,000 bond pending sentencing, which is scheduled for Dec. 18.

The investigation featured a collaboration between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Naugatuck Police Department.
