1 sent to burn unit after early morning house fire in Cheshire, leaving neighbors 'devastated'

Fire crews were called to a home on Rockview Drive early Friday morning.

CHESHIRE, Conn — Neighbors in Cheshire are offering their empathy after an early-morning fire forced a family from their home and sent someone to the burn unit in Bridgeport for treatment.

Fire officials were called to the house fire at the corner of Rockville Drive and Green Hill Lane at around 2:30a.m.

“I was devastated when I woke up and found out it was a family down the street from us,” said Cynthia Ruiz, who lives on Green Hill Lane.

“Driving by this morning it was really intense and it was a lot to take in, seeing the house you walk by with your children every day kind of just gone,” added anther Cheshire resident, Bailey Sicbaldi.

Four adults and one dog were inside the home at the time of the fire, according to fire officials. All made it out, but two people were hospitalized, including one person who was sent to the Bridgeport burn unit.

“They all got out, thank God. One person really suffered burn injuries,” Ruiz said.

While the investigation continues, neighbors vow to offer assistance and review their own home emergency plans.

“It’s always been a tight community when things happen like this. The town automatically goes forward and helps as much as they can…I know the town of Cheshire is going to help them out, I saw that,” said Ruiz.

“We do have the window ladders upstairs in our house, and I was talking to my husband today like check all the batteries tonight in our fire detectors,” Sicbaldi said.

Above all, they’re hoping for a speedy recovery for their neighbors.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by Cheshire Fire Marshals, Cheshire Police Department and the State Fire Marshal.
