NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The New Haven Police Department reported Friday night that a fatal shooting occurred in the city earlier that evening.
According to New Haven police, city resident John Reynolds, 56, was shot and killed at the Bella Vista housing complex on Eastern Street. It is unclear if he was a resident of the high rise building.
Police said they went to the housing complex at 5:29 p.m. Friday after multiple 911 calls reported a man carrying a machete, later identified as Reynolds, who was on one of the upper floors "banging on apartment doors and rambling."
The callers allegedly reported to police that Reynolds had a history of mental health problems and was possibly under the influence.
Dispatch then received multiple 911 calls from people who heard gunshots, police said.
Investigators learned that a resident of the floor shot Reynolds after an altercation between the two, according to police.
Reynolds died of his injuries, police said. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy.
Police said they have not arrested the individual who shot Reynolds and that the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked by police to call detectives at 203-946-6304 or the department's anonymous tip-line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).
