Personal information may have been breached during New Haven $6M cyberattack, officials warn

The city is trying to reach the dozens of people they did not have contact information for to make them aware of the breach.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Money may have not been the only thing stolen from the city of New Haven after a cyberattack last year. City officials are informing its past and present employees, vendors, and more that hackers may have accessed the personal information of hundreds of people.

After a forensics investigation through a third-party firm, the city determined that hackers could have accessed the personal information of 404 people, including city employees, retirees and vendors. The information varied from person to person, but included names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account numbers, individual tax identification numbers, health insurance information, and/or medical information, according to the city.

It was determined through the investigation that from June 1, 2023, through June 18, 2023, someone had unauthorized access to city email accounts that contained personal information.

The city sent letters to 334 people it had contact information for. They're now trying to reach the 70 people they did not have contact information to bring awareness to this situation.

The city is not aware of any reports of fraud or identity theft related to this investigation.

This comes as the city continues to financially recover from a cyberattack last June, in which $6 million was stolen. The city has since recovered or is scheduled to recover around $5.1 million.

Those impacted by the breach and seeking more information can call the city's incident response line at 888-326-0947 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST, Monday – Friday. Click here for more information from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on identity theft.
