NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A dog is in recovery at an animal shelter after she, along with a second dog, was abandoned in the area of Southern Connecticut State University on Monday.
The Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, based in Branford, said some students from the university saw the two dogs getting dumped out of a vehicle near Blake Street in New Haven.
The shelter said the students were concerned and went to try to catch the dogs when the second one, described as a gray pitbull, took off. The shelter asks if anyone sees a gray pitbull wandering around in the neighborhood to contact them or New Haven police.
The students caught one of the dogs and called authorities, and then Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter after they learned their local shelter couldn't provide medical care.
Injuries on the dog include having severe skin issues, a flea infestation, pressure sores, and a limp from maybe being held in a too-small crate or due to her emaciation. She also has overgrown nails that are difficult to walk on.
The shelter saw she needed medical care and treatment for her fleas and anemia, needed medical baths, and was also likely to see an orthopedic specialist.
"She is already starting to build trust," the shelter said on their Facebook post. "She is starting to realize she is safe."
One of the students and an animal control officer came up with the same idea for a name for the dog: Noel.
"It's a fitting name both because of the time of year and because the meaning of Noel is 'good news,'" the shelter said. "The good news Noel, you are now safe."
It's unknown at this time if New Haven police are investigating this incident.
If you'd like to help with Noel's care, you can do so by clicking here or by sending a check to Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, 749 East Main St., Branford, CT, 06405.
