NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A person was killed in a crash Friday night after their car struck a New Haven Fire Department SUV, police said.
Officers received a report at 8:34 p.m. of a crash involving serious injuries at the intersection of Hemingway Street and Russell Street. Police at the scene said they found an SUV in the westbound lane on Hemingway Street, along with a Honda Accord that crossed over the double line.
The fire crew that was inside the SUV at the time of the crash began giving medical services to the driver of the Accord, including administering Narcan. All individuals involved were taken to the hospital, and the driver died of his injuries sometime later, police said.
On Tuesday, police identified the driver of the Accord as 49-year-old Robert Cordova of East Haven.
According to the fire crew at the scene, they had been traveling along Hemingway Street going west while the Accord was going east in the opposite lane. For an unknown reason, the Accord went over the double lines and hit the SUV head-on, police said.
The New Haven Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team was called to investigate the crash. Investigators spoke to witnesses at the scene, searched for surveillance video, and will continue gathering interviews and information before a final report, police said.
Anyone with details regarding the crash is asked to call investigators at 203-946-6304 or through the police department's anonymous tip line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).
