NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A man was sentenced to 40 years in prison Monday for his charges in the 2023 fatal shooting of a woman in New Haven, according to the state's Division of Criminal Justice.
Leon Guerrero, 34, received the sentencing after a Supreme Court jury in June found him guilty in the murder of Tayna Rodriguez, 26, the DCJ said.
Citing evidence from the trial, the DCJ said that Guerrero shot Rodriguez on April 23, 2023.
The incident began with an altercation between Guerrero and two men that didn't involve Rodriguez, the DCJ said. According to New Haven Judge Elpedio Vitale, she was "attempting to be a peacemaker" when Guerrero "tragically shot and killed" her.
Family and friends of both Rodriguez and Guerrero spoke at the sentencing Monday, the DCJ said.
Vitale noted an "enormous sense of grief and loss for the family" and noted that "her parents lost a child and her own child lost a mother," according to the DCJ.
