NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Nearly a dozen people have been charged for drug trafficking in New Haven, officials said.

Ten New Haven residents and one Hamden resident were charged in federal court Thursday for reportedly running a drug trafficking organization in the Fair Haven neighborhood of the city.

According to court documents, the FBI's Safe Streets Task Force began investigating the organization, reportedly run by 39-year-old Mariano Irizarry, in June 2022.

The investigation included the use of court-authorized wiretaps, physical surveillance, and several controlled purchases of fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and crack cocaine, according to court documents. Irizarry reportedly distributed the drugs to a network of street-level dealers as well as to his own customers, officials said.

The investigation also uncovered two other people, 53-year-old Dianna Zeilik and 34-year-old Luis Garcia, who reportedly were getting ahold of and passing out prescription narcotic pills, some of which they also distributed to Izrizarry.

While officials investigated, they seized more than 250 grams of fentanyl from 23-year-old Kelvin Alvarado, more than 400 grams of fentanyl and 160 grams of heroin from 35-year-old Luis Sanchez-Vazquez, and more than 1,000 oxycodone pills from Zeilik, along with several guns.

The FBI's Safe Streets Task Force includes members from the FBI, Connecticut State Police, Connecticut Department of Corrections, and New Haven, Milford, East Haven, West Haven, and Wallingford police departments.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Brendan J. Keefe is prosecuting the case through the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Program.   Additional information about the OCDETF Program can be found on their website.
