NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A New Haven apartment building fire on Saturday evening has displaced over 35 people.
New Haven fire officials said crews responded at 5:33 p.m. for smoke in the building at 370 Mansfield. Crews found smoke coming from the rear of the building and began an aggressive search and attack on a fire in the kitchen of one of the apartments.
The fire began to extend out the window and into the floor above. A second alarm was called.
The fire was brought under control at 6:22 p.m. One person was rescued via a ladder from the building and another occupant was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for smoke inhalation. They are in non-critical condition.
No firefighters were injured.
Hoarding conditions were a factor.
The building had 23 apartments and suffered moderate damage and significant smoke damage. A bus was called in to warm occupants and keep them from the rain. Over 35 people have been displaced and 21 apartments are being assisted.
Two pets were also rescued by New Haven firefighters.
Red Cross disaster responders are at the scene.
