NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A woman was sworn in as Assistant Chief of Administration for the New Haven Fire Department Monday, becoming the highest-ranked female chief officer for the department in "over 160 years," Fire Chief John Alston said Monday.
The Board of Fire Commissioners voted to appoint Assistant Chief Shakira Samuel, a 22-year veteran of the city's fire department, on May 31 on a recommendation from Alston.
"Chief Samuel has been a tremendous resource and has been a rising star in our department," Alston said. "Her duties will include administration of the budget, discipline, special projects, policy, and facility management."
According to Alston, she most recently served as acting fire marshal, and previously contributed to the fire department as an inspector, arson investigation supervisor and deputy fire marshal.
Samuel's swearing ceremony took place at the New Haven City Hall Monday evening.
