NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A federal grand jury in New Haven returned an indictment on Tuesday charging a New Haven man with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut.
31-year-old Elbert Llorrens was convicted in Connecticut federal court of carjacking in March 2017 and was on federal supervised release when, as alleged in the indictment, he possessed a loaded Smith & Wesson, model SD40 VE, .40 caliber pistol on March 1.
According to prosecutors, it is a violation of federal law for an individual previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce.
Llorrens faces a maximum prison sentence of 15 years if he is convicted of the charge in the indictment and he has been detained since his arrest on state charges on March 1.
The investigation is currently being conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the New Haven Police Department, and the West Haven Police Department.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized that an indictment is not evidence of guilt, and charges are only allegations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
