NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A New Haven man has been sentenced to 33 years in prison for the fatal shooting of a New Haven teenager in July 2022.
Kiyon Matheney, 26, was sentenced on Tuesday for killing 17-year-old John Tubac-Saquil.
A New Haven Superior Court jury on October 6, 2023, found Matheney guilty of Manslaughter in the First Degree with a Firearm, Carrying a Pistol Without a Permit, and Criminal Possession of a Firearm.
According to evidence introduced at trial, the defendant shot Tubac-Saquil shortly after 11 p.m. on July 3, 2022, when the defendant approached the victim’s truck where the victim was talking to his girlfriend.
Tubac-Saquil died four days later.
An arrest warrant was secured on October 17, 2022, and served two days later on the defendant.
Tubac-Saquil, a recent high school graduate at the time of his death, planned to start college in the fall of 2022. Several teachers and instructors, as well as Tubac-Saquil’s family, addressed the court at sentencing.
