NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A West Haven man is dead after he was shot near a New Haven nightclub early Thursday, police said.
New Haven police said officers were on patrol in the area of Terminal 110 nightclub at 240 Sargent Drive just after midnight.
According to officials, as people were leaving the club, officers reported hearing gunshots. A short time later, an officer was approached by a man who said he was shot.
Police, fire, and EMS first responders were called to the scene, and the man was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries in the following hours, police said.
The victim was identified Friday as 30-year-old Otis Powell, of West Haven.
It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting.
Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit and Bureau of Identification were also called to the scene to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and search for surveillance footage. Police said ShotSpotter was not activated in the area, but ballistic evidence was found.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have information valuable to investigators to call detectives at 203-946-6304 or through the department’s anonymous tip line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).
