NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The renovated, reimagined and now reopened Yale Peabody Museum has just added some glitz and glimmer to their exhibit space.
This week, the museum staff officially opened “Minerals, Earth & Space,” an exhibit that showcases a treasured collection of gemstones from across the globe.
Yale Peabody Museum Director David Skelly said, “When I talk to people about this and I get really excited, they look at me and say, 'so isn’t this a bunch of rocks?' And I say, 'no- no you have got to come in see it for yourself.'”
From a more than 100-pound carat star sapphire to a 436-pound stibnite specimen, the exhibit is meant to captivate and appeal to a wide audience.
Skelly added, “All of this stuff, when you look at, it is important to remember these are just natural products of the Earth’s process.”
While the Peabody Museum did have a gemstone collection before the building and galleries were renovated, the new “David Friend Gallery” makes the exhibits a destination, according to Skelly.
He said, “Just about every case in this room and the adjoining rooms here have some brand-new stuff for people to see. This absolutely is a world class collection, and we feel so lucky to have it here.”
