‘Scooby’ Gray of New Haven pleads guilty to gun and drug offenses

Gray, 23, pleaded guilty on Monday to unlawfully possessing a gun, ammunition and drugs in New Haven, prosecutors say.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A New Haven man pleaded guilty in the city on Monday to unlawfully possessing a firearm, ammunition and narcotics, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

Shayquan “Scooby” Gray, 23, had an active state arrest warrant and was observed on March 14 participating in a drug transaction, according to court documents and statements made in court. Gray was arrested that day on the state warrant.

Prosecutors said that at the time of Gray’s arrest, he possessed a Ziploc bag containing 80 small individual bags of cocaine, a Polymer 80 “ghost gun” loaded with six rounds of ammo in the magazine and over $1,200 in cash.

According to the release, Gray pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. Prosecutors said the possession with intent to distribute cocaine charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. They note that possession of a gun in relation to a drug trafficking crime carries a consecutive mandatory minimum term of five years imprisonment and up to life in prison.

Gray has been detained since being arrested on March 14. His sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 12 in Hartford.

The investigation is being led by the New Haven Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, which aims to reduce violent crime by identifying the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and developing solutions to address them.
