ANSONIA, Conn. — A person was hit and killed by a train near Ansonia on Friday, temporarily suspending the Waterbury Branch service for Metro-North, officials said.
According to the Metropolitan Transit Authority, Metro-North Train #6937 departed Waterbury around 1 p.m., and was due into Bridgeport at 1:58 p.m. It was traveling at 42 miles per hour, which MTA says is a "normal speed for this section of track".
At 1:40 p.m. the engineer observed a man, "approximately 65-years-old crouched on the tracks approximately 200 feet north of the Division Street railroad crossing in Ansonia," according to an MTA press release.
The train's engineer activated emergency brakes and, MTA says, subsequently stated that as the train approached the man made no attempt to get out of the way of the train, which was unable to stop before impacting the trespasser, who was pronounced deceased by Ansonia EMS at 1:57 pm.
Metro-North initially suspended service on the Waterbury Branch as a result of the incident.
Metro-North arranged for buses to transport passengers aboard the train involved in the incident to Derby-Shelton, where they were able to board a southbound train to Bridgeport.
