NAUGATUCK, Conn. — The driver of a car that crashed into a utility pole and hit a parked car was arrested Sunday morning after running away from the scene, Naugatuck police said.
Officers responded to the intersection of Buckingham Street, North Church Street and Bradbury Street for the crash.
Police determined that the driver of a 2007 Mercury, later identified as 20-year-old Mauricio Alziphat, drove into a utility pole on Buckingham Street, snapping it in half onto North Church Street. Alziphat then reportedly drove the Mercury across the driveway and collided with another car that was parked on the lawn of a nearby residence.
The Mercury came to a stop in a wooded area near Bradbury Street, police said.
After Alziphat attempted to run away from the scene, he was taken into custody after authorities chased him briefly. He appeared to be intoxicated and uninjured, according to police.
Alziphat was charged with driving under the influence, evading responsibility, traveling unreasonably fast, and failure to drive in the proper lane.
Road closures were reported in the area while utility repairs were underway.
