State police help return more than $63,500 to victim of cryptocurrency scam in Cheshire

State police detectives traced the victim’s stolen funds and located the suspect’s digital wallet, which still contained most of the stolen cryptocurrency.

CHESHIRE, Conn. — A victim of a cryptocurrency scam that occurred this spring can rest easier after more than $63,500 was returned to them on Friday, according to a release from state police.

The release said that state police and the Statewide Prosecution Bureau in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney returned the funds to the victim, who had lost over $68,000 worth of cryptocurrency in a scam.

In April, the state police Statewide Organized Crime Investigative Task Force and Cryptocurrency Working Group were alerted that a Cheshire resident had upwards of $68,000 of cryptocurrency stolen from them.

“The victim received an unsolicited offer for new tokens, which was a phishing scheme, resulting in the loss of all the cryptocurrency held in the victim’s digital wallet,” the release said.

State police detectives traced the stolen funds using blockchain analysis and found the suspect’s digital wallet, which still contained most of the stolen money. Detectives used appropriate legal authority to seize more than $63,500 of the stolen funds, according to the release.

State police said that a motion for the return of the seized property to the victim was filed at Meriden Superior Court, and the ongoing investigation identified multiple victims across the United States.

In the release, state police warned individuals with cryptocurrency to be vigilant and on the lookout for scammers.

“The CSP Cryptocurrency Working Group would like to remind residents never to engage with unsolicited offers for cash, cryptocurrency or investments from unknown persons,” the release said. “Never share your personally identifiable information or financial information with someone contacting you via text message, phone call, email or social media.”

According to the release, one should contact csp.virtualcurrency@ct.gov if they believe they are a victim of fraud.
