ANSONIA, Conn. — A teenage girl has been charged with making a threat on social media that led to officials closing schools on Thursday, police said.
At 6:40 a.m., Ansonia police were told about a threat to the town's schools posted on social media. The board of education made a decision to cancel school. Police said they interviewed several potential witnesses, and eventually a 13-year-old girl confessed to making the post and she was arrested. She was referred to Juvenile Court for Threatening First Degree and Breach of Peace Second Degree.
Board of Education and Superintendent Joseph DiBacco and police released a statement after the arrest aimed at parents and guardians, which said, "Please speak to your children about how to communicate (i.e. email, social media) in an appropriate manner. Please know that all threats to our schools or students are taken very seriously and are investigated thoroughly.
We encourage parents to speak with your child about making the right choices and the potential consequences of their actions."
Officials said that there will be a regular schedule of classes on Friday.
